Immigration Bills Make Moves in Congress

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

With a presidential campaign about to head into full swing, and an August recess approaching for Congress, you would think most bills in Congress would be stalled.  However, the four immigration bills in Congress are seeing some progress:

  1. HR 6034: The House Subcommittee has approved this bill that would eliminate the widow penalty in family immigration cases.  The full Judiciary Committee will be moving on the bill this week as well.
  2. HR 5924: This nurse immigration bill would temporarily parcel out green card numbers for nurses and create a training fund to help increase the number of American-based nurses.  Markup is could possibly happen sometime this week.
  3. S. 3257: This extension bill, sponsored by Sen. Leahy (D-VT) and Specter (R-PA), would extend the life of the EB-5, Conrad 30, E-Verify, and special immigration religious worker programs.  Although this bill has only been introduced, because the bills don’t make serious changes to the programs, it has the possibility of moving quickly.
  4. PEFAR AIDS relief bill: The Senate is considering to strike down a bill that would eliminate the HIV ground of removal.
